Have a look at my new web site here... My Wildlife Wonders

2010 - PROOF the breeding season extends well into SEPTEMBER on the Slea shows that any row boats on the Slea during August (as is planned) would have serious consequences for the wildlife... The Dabchicks had 2 babies of which I believe only 1 survived, it was well into September when they HATCHED so any row boats on the Slea during August would have destroyed the nest/eggs and driven away the adults. The Slea is too narrow for boats and this kind of wildlife to coexist, the Slea is only a few feet wide in places especially near the reeds where the Dabchicks nest and breed.

Still no…

Still no Moorhens on Lollycocks pond, I dont know what has happened to them but I doubt very much that something has happened to all of them, so hopefully they are in the reeds somewhere ?

I did see the Kingfisher twicw today :) and a Sparrowhawk.

Its 2 years since they drained Lollycocks Pond…

…I dont know when they are going to restock it but the longer it is the better as far as I am concerned (= no fishermen) Its the ONLY Nature Reserve that I know of that encourages fishing (when there are fish in there obviously).

The water is …

The water is VERY low again past Cogglesford Mill, the Kingfisher and Heron will definately not be using this stretch until there is more water again.

I only saw a few ducks on Lollycocks Pond again today, so its over a week since I saw any Moorhens there, but I suppose they are still around.

I did see the Dabchick again so it looks like he/she may stay for the winter. In previous years when we have had Dabchicks over winter on the Slea they seem to go away about April, presumable looking for a mate and then comeback June/July (assuming they were the same Dab) hopefully to breed, lets hope this is the case with this Dab.

Terry

3 dead ducks…

Today there were 3 dead ducks and a dead pigeon floating in the Slea near Cogglesford Mill which is VERY unusual, I wonder if someone has been taking pot shots at the wildlife, if they are I hope they shoot themselves by mistake (or on purpose I don’t really mind which). I have no proof that it is an air gun but it seems the most likely scenario to me :(

I did get a VERY good view of the Kingfisher this morning, the river past the Mill is deeper with all the overnight rain and is deep enough now (but for how long) for Kingy to dive for fish without getting his beak stuck in the river bottom. Here he is with a fish he caught this morning…
lots-kingy.jpg

I think this is a male as males have black underneath the bottom beak, but there is just a hint of orange so I am not 100% certain.

TWICE I saw…

TWICE I saw the Kingfisher today :) The first he was on one of the wooden stages on Lollycocks pond, the second was going downstream near the Leisure Centre. Apparently Allan saw a Heron on Lollycocks pond also this morning. Someone should tell the Heron and Kingfisher that there are no fish in the pond, at least I have not heard it has been restocked since it was cleaned out yet.

I also saw the Dabchick today :)

The Kingfisher a while ago…

Terry

There was nothing…

There was NOTHING on Lollyocks pond this morning, not even the 2 teenager Moorhens :( it looked just like it had been abandoned, hopefully the Moorhens were just hanging around somewhere nearby.

I did see the (a) Kingfisher this morning though, its the first time I have seen him for weeks, but that isnt surprising as the water below Cogglesford Mill is too shallow in losts of places for him to dive without his beak being embedded in the Slea river bed.

Terry

Not much water…

Not much water in the Slea :) past Cogglesford Mill there is only a few inches and no water has gone over the weir to the old Slea (near Leisure Centre Bridge) for months.

I saw both Teenager Moorhens on Lollycocks Pond again but no Dabchick although he was apparently seen over the weekend.

Here is one from the archives, September 2007, 2 years ago…

Two bits of good news…

Two bits of good news….

1. I saw BOTH teenager Moorhens on Lollycocks pond today, so they are both still ok and 1 must have been having a laugh at my expense by hiding over the last week or so :)

2. I saw this also today, so he/she is still around…
lots_50d_400m_f56_500_iauto.jpg

… Allan also saw it so its not just a figment of my imagination :) He/she was a little nervous when we stopped nearby but didnt try to hide so I think where ever he came from he has seen humans before.

Terry

I think I have got to come to 2 conclusions…

I think I have got to come to 2 conclusions…

1. Stifflegs wont be around any more as I have not seen him for months, it would be nice to see him again but I am not optimistic in that at all now :)

2. There is probably only 1 Teenager Moorhen on Lollycocks pond as I have not seen the second for the last few weeks :)

Nobody has seen the Dabchick I saw last week again, so it looks like it was only a fleeting visit. I did see 2 of the Common Lizards today though :)

Terry

WAHOO…. :)

WAHOO, I saw a dabchick on the Slea today :) this is the first sighting for me this year. Ironically its also a year this week since we lost all but 1 Dabchick because of detergent getting into the river and washing all the protective oils from the Dabchicks (and everything else’s – Ducks Moorhens, Coots) which caused their death by drowning :( A reminder…

So to see a dabchick back was very welcome.

I only saw 1 teenager Moorhen on the Pond so I am beginning to think we have lost the other one, however I have not given up hope as I also only saw 1 adult, so I am hoping the others were hiding somewhere.

Also saw just the 1 Common Lizard.

Terry

Again I only saw 1…

Again I only saw 1 of the 2 ‘new’ teenager Moorhens on Lollycocks pond. It was not a very nice day so the other may have been hiding, if I only see 1 next time I will start to worry about what has happened to the other.

I did see a Kingfisher today, the first time for what seems like ages, but no lizards and the Tufty definitely seems to have gone.

There has been a distinct lack of these near the Slea this year, I think its probably because when they drained Lollycocks pond all the nymphs would have been killed and it takes about 4 years for the cycle to get to this stage again…

Terry

I only saw 1…

I only saw 1 of the baby (now teenager) Moorhens on the pond but they can hide quite well there so I am not unduly worried at the moment about the other one. I shall keep my eye out to try and see 2 whenever I go down the Slea.

I also saw 3 of the Common Lizards :)

A dog went into the river in a place where they often go, it jumped back a bit and when it got out its foot was bleeding, on closer inspection of where he went in the water revealed a broken bottle :( The dog was obviously in pain as it didnt want to put any weight on the cut paw and kept stopping and licking it. I just wish the person who threw the bottle into the river had stepped on it instead of the dog.

Here is a Bee from a few weeks ago…

I was a bit worried…

I was a bit worried this morning because I could only find 1 of the baby Moorhens on the pond. After a lot of looking I found the second :) so they are still doing well, and growing.

There were also 4-5 ducklings on the Slea, not 1-2-3 day old but probably 10(ish) days old so I dont know why I have not seen them before ?

1 Common Lizard today near the railway bridge.

Terry

The 2…

The 2 baby Moorhens on Lollycocks pond are still doing very well, they have certainly grown since I saw them last week. Nobody has seen the Tufted Duck for a couple of weeks so it looks like she has flown. Everything else much as it was. Someone said to me that there were not many male Mallards about, i explained that they were in eclipse (molting) and that the males just have the colouring of females at the moment, they will soon be back to their normal plumage.

There were 3 Common Lizards near the railway bridge today, here is one of them but this is about 6-7 bigger than they are in real life…

Terry

Still no sign of…

Still no sign of Stiff Legs, I am now doubting that I will ever see him again :(

I did see the 2 baby Moorhens on the pond along with 3 older siblings and mum and dad, so far all the moorhens have survived this year on the pond so it just shows what nature can do when there are no fishermen around to disturb the wildlife, not sure how long that will last as I presume they will soon restock the pond with fish for fishing. How can a area designated as a Nature Reserve allow fishing, its utterly BONKERS.

The trees opposite the Leisure Centre have been pollarded over the last few weeks, they will grow back but it seemed just a few weeks early to me as there were still Blackbirds nesting in my garden at the time they started. More of a worry is that (presumably) the Navigation Trust have cut back overhanging branches of trees, someone asked ‘why’ and were told its ‘for boats to pass’ :(

Although it has been very wet I have managed to get some shots of butterflies from my garden…

The weather forcast said…

The weather forecast said rain stopping by 9am and then starting again at 11am, but I got soaked by 9:30 :(

I did have time to see the 2 baby Moorhens on the pond so they are still doing well, I didnt see Tufty but I assume she is still around. Not much else as I had to shorten my walk because of the rain.

A woodpecker from my trip to Finland…
