6-8-10-3

6-8-10-3 -The number of Moorhen babies in each family that I saw today The first 6 had 6 last week so we have not lost any of these. The 8 family had 9 last week but they are spread out quite a bit making counting hard, I *think* I saw 9 but can only definitely [...]

There are still…

There are still nine baby Moorhens in one family so they are doing really well. I also saw 6 baby Moorhens near the Mill so it certainly looks like their parents lost all the babies from the first brood as they have not been seen for some time. Further upstream near to where the Dabchicks [...]

The NINE baby Moorhens are…

The NINE baby Moorhens are still doing well, this is certainly the biggest brood I have personally seen. I was reading a book which said that some Moorhens lay eggs in other Moorhens nests as a sort of ‘insurance’ that they pass on their genes, I wonder if the lack of nest sites on the [...]

I did not see any…

I did not see any of the 5 Baby Moorhens near the Mill again so I have to assume they did not survive Although I cannot tell 1 Moorhen from another by visual recognition, I do believe the parents of these 5 babies are the same that held this territory for the last couple of [...]

I am still not sure…

I am still not sure what or if anything has happened to the 5 baby Moorhens towards the Mill. They were again not on the water but an Adult Moorhen is sitting on the nest and there may be some babies underneath it ???? The Moorhen that had 11 Eggs has had at least 8 [...]

I do not know what has happened…

I do not know what has happened to the 5 baby Moorhens as I did not see even 1 today although 1 adult was in the nest so hopefully she/he had some underneath them. The Moorhen with 11 (yes ELEVEN) eggs has at least 5 of them hatched, here is a shot showing 3 today… [...]

Isaw what I believed to be…

I saw what I believed to be a dead duckling floating downstream, however it then started to move its legs, so it was alive but obviously badly injured. There was no chance of getting to it and then the struggle stopped – it was now dead No wonder I do not like this time of [...]

I only saw three…

I only saw three of the Baby Moorhens today, but it was cold and mum was on the nest so the others may well have been under her. I saw plenty of… …ducklings but I also saw two dead ones. It looked like at least one of these had been killed by an adult duck [...]

There are still five…

There are still five baby Moorhens being looked after by three adults so they have all survived well so far. There were quite a lot of ducklings on the river this morning. One of the Mothers looked like the one on the nest in the photo below and the nest was empty, although I cannot [...]

There were about 6-7…

There were about 6-7 families of Ducklings between the Hub and the Leisure Centre bridge today, but strangely non between the Bridge and Cogglesford Mill ? The duck shown below is still on its nest and I also noticed that there were 2or 3 Moorhen nests also. It was in the paper that the trees [...]

There are still a few…

There are still a few ducklings about but not as many as a week or so ago, but the ones that remain are getting a bit bigger. I saw a dead female Mallard which was obviously drowned by about 4 males trying to mate with her, and they were still mating with her when she [...]

Seems quite a while since I have seen…

Seems quite a while since I have seen a Water Vole on the Slea, but here is a bad picture of one today… …the Duck with 21 ducklings only seemed to have 16 today so it looks like we have lost 5. The ducklings were struggling a bit to swim against the current which is [...]

No sign of the…

No sign of the (now only) 2 duckling family, I suppose they have perished There was a Mum with 21 (yes TWENTY ONE) ducklings this morning. The Coot was on Lollycocks Pond as Graham had mentioned and I saw Stiff Legs. I have seen 2 ducks nests during my walks, one is very safe from [...]

Yesterday we had…

Yesterday we had 5 ducklings (down from 7) and today we only have 4 The ducklings and mum seem to come out of the water a lot I think so that mum gets away from the male ducks, but it does mean that they are prone to attack from dogs both on leads and off [...]

We have some…

We have some ducklings Apparantly there were 9 ducklings on Wednesday, sadly only 8 yesterday and only 7 today, I just hope the remaining ones survive the cold nights we are due. Its very early for Slea ducklings as normally its the beginning of April when we see the first family. The 2 Swans are [...]
