Have we still got 3 baby Moorhens…
Have we still got 3 baby Moorhens near the Mill – YES we have They are getting a lot bigger but they do stray much too near the weir for my liking, I just hope none go over. There was a Duckling below the weir today so I assume that must have gone over the [...]
After not going down the Slea…
After not going down the Slea for a few days most things seemed ‘as was’ but there was also a nice highlight. First I saw a Water Vole carrying some dry vegetation into a little burrow so I am hoping he/she is nesting there Although I thought we had lost a Baby Moorhen near the [...]
All 3 baby Moorhens are…
All 3 baby Moorhens are ok but mum Coot is still sitting on the nest so I didnt see any baby Coots. The duckling below the weir at the Mill yesterday was nowhere to be seen but I will keep an eye out for it over the next few days. One Moorhen has built a [...]
I saw the baby…
I saw the baby Moorhens today, all 3 of them Not a very good photo but it shows one of them… … I didnt see any Baby Coots as mum was still sitting on its nest and I assume it/they are there keeping warm. I did see s Duckling below Cogglesford Weir on its own, [...]
A sad sight…
A sad site today, a female Mallard was on the side of the river dead, I assume that it had succumbed to the ‘over eager’ Drakes, this was sad in itself but there was a Drake sitting next to her, these two were all alone so I assume the Drake was her ‘mate’ He looked [...]
We went much much further…
We went much much further downstream today as we had been led to believe that a pair of swans may be nesting, however there was just a yearling cygnet which would not still be with its parents if they were nesting/breeding, so it seems were were on a ‘wild goose (swan) chase’ There seems to [...]
I think the family…
I think the family in yesterdays post is now below Cogglesford Mill weir again, it certainly looked like mum and there were 14 ducklings with her, this would mean we have lost 4 (I think). I did not see any more large families upstream either, and because of this and that fact that mum is [...]
I did my good deed for the day….
Walking downstream past Cogglesford Mill Alan and I saw a mum with quite a large batch of ducklings and she was heading towards the Mill. I have seen this before and the mum sometimes takes the ducklings up the slope, over the Mill walkway, jumps into the Slea and then continues upstream through the Mill [...]
Still lots of…
Still lots of ducklings but it is impossible to say which is in which family. I did only see 2 of the ‘larger’ ducklings when last time I saw them there were 3, hopefully the other one was around somewhere as they are now big enough to wander alone. I am really worried about ‘Lucky’ [...]
I did not see…
I did not see ‘Lucky’ again this morning I did see quite a few ducklings but it was too hard to determine how many and which family they belonged to, however I did see the 3 slightly bigger ducklings again so they are doing well now. The hilight was seeing a Water Vole and Mel [...]
Good news and bad news…
Bad news first, the mum who had 20 ducklings on Friday now has only 14, but I was expecting worse after the weather we have had the last few days. There was also a few other ducklings about but it is now hard to know which family is which. The good news (well mainly good) [...]
We have another 4 or 5
We have another 4 or 5 families of ducklings and one family has 20 ???? I could not find mum or any of the 4 ducklings that have been around for the last few days I just hope they were hiding somewhere. I went to Spalding yesterday and walked along the river, I spoke to [...]
We now only have…
We now only have 4 ducklings I just do not know what happens to them Today I did see 3 Dabchicks and the Coots definitely look like they are nesting as is a Song Thrush who I will try and keep a close eye on to see any progress, also saw a Kingfisher downstream of [...]
I got a call on Friday…
I got a call on Friday from Alan saying that there were now only 6 ducklings left (we had 9 on Thursday) and this morning there was only 5 I would love to know what happens to them, is it a predator, other ducks, cats ????? Both Coots were around today and after not seeing [...]
No sign of ‘one eye’ today…
No sign of ‘one eye’ today all 9 ducklings are still ok though Also saw ‘stiff legs’, ‘Lucky’, 2 dabchicks and the 2 Coots. The Coots were chasing Moorhens away from what I suspect will be their nest site. Hoping to start a ‘Starling Appreciation Society’ but this was taken in my backgarden and not [...]
