Again I saw 4…
Again I saw 4 baby Dabchicks today, mum and dad were both off the nest and bringing food back for the little ones, mum then settled back on the nest so I am still unsure if she is still incubating an egg or not. Dad (I assume) chased off an adult Moorhen that came too [...]
I saw 4…
I saw 4 baby Dabchicks this morning and mum still wanted to sit on the nest so perhaps there is still another one to hatch. Here is the first (very bad) photograph of one of the new arrivals with mum and dad… …the workmen are getting nearer to the Dabchicks and when they get opposite [...]
No more photographs…
No more photographs until I get one of the THREE Dabchick babies I saw three babies this morning as mum moved on the nest but there could have been more or perhaps eggs are still to hatch. I am hoping that tomorrow they may be on the water ??? but that is what I have [...]
Just a quick update…
Just a quick update to say they I think only one Dabchick egg has hatched so far as I saw eggs also still in the nest today when the sitting Dab stretched its legs. Hopefully some more will hatch over the weekend Just before the Railway bridge (past the Mill) I saw the 2 adult [...]
We now have at least one…
We now have at least one baby Dabchick It poked its head out from under mum this morning and there may have been others but I only saw the one We just have to hope that the work on resurfacing the path keeps away from this area for another week or so. I was also [...]
The Council rang me back…
The Council rang me back regarding the resurfacing of the River Slea path. I spoke to a very nice lady who told me that they were doing the surfacing before the ‘main walking season’ as they were concerned about being sued if anybody injured themselves. Well, people walk along there ALL THE TIME and the [...]
CRAZY…
CRAZY… Lincolnshire County Council is resurfacing the path along the Slea between the Leisure Centre and Cogglesford Mill, the footpath will be closed for 5 WEEKs so it must be some substantial work. The footpath does need to be resurfaced but WHY is it being done at the very worst possible time for the Wildlife [...]
I think we may have lost…
I think we may have lost the 2 new Baby Coots Both parents were seen this morning and they were feeding the ‘teenager’ from the first batch but the little ones were nowhere in sight, they were around yesterday so what has happened I dont know ? On a happier not the Dabchicks are still [...]
I saw the two…
I saw the two new baby Coots that Graham mentioned in his comment to the previous post. Also, again as Graham mentioned, the original baby Coot (now a teenager) was being ignored by the parents, but I think he/she is old enough to find its own food now. The Dabchicks are still on the nest [...]
There now appears to be just…
There now appears to be just 3 ‘yellow’ ducklings surviving out of the original 5 but I did see 6 baby Moorhens from the family of 7 whereas on Wednesday I only saw 4 and the Dabchicks are still ok I also saw all 3 ‘teenager’ Moorhens near the Mill along with the ‘teenager’ Coot [...]
After the rain…
After the rain the river is a bit higher than normal but the Dabchicks are ok at the moment. I just hope the river doesnt rise much further over the next few days otherwise the Dabs could be in trouble. I only saw 4 of the 7 Baby Moorhens near the Dabs so I am [...]
More new life on the Slea…
After not going down the Slea for a few days I noticed a bit more new life around First the Baby Coot is doing very well and is quite big, also the Baby Moorhens near the Mill, however I only saw 2 of the 3 that are normally there, so I am unsure if we [...]
I saw both…
I saw both Dabchicks today so they are still around, it certainly looks like they are starting to nest I also saw all 3 baby Moorhens and the baby Coot I know its not from the Slea but I just had to post this shot of my Garden Blackbird singing his heart out today, I [...]
A surprise today…
A surprise today….. there was a DABCHICK on the Slea, just the one but this is how it went last year and eventually 2 did nest by late June early July. At almost the same time as I saw the Dabchick I also saw a Water Vole The baby Coot and 3 baby Moorhens are [...]
I saw nature in the RAW…
I saw nature in the RAW this morning, a Jackdaw was plucking a duckling on the Banks of the Slea and then flew away with it, the only good thing is that I do not think the Jackdaw actually killed the duckling but just found it already dead – hope so anyway. I only saw [...]
