A adult Moorhen with babies saw a small duckling getting too close for comfort, so it attacked the duckling which dived under water, the Moorhen was waiting for it to come back to the surface when I saw something dark travelling fast out of the corner of my eye. This dark object was the ducklings mum who just attacked the Moorhen by flying straight into it. The two fought for a couple of seconds which gave the duckling time to get away
I thought the mum duck did exceeding well
There appears to be quite a few smallish fish (2-3-4 inches long) in the river past the Mill at the moment, they are probably always there but with the low water levels, clear water and strong sunshine this morning, they were probably more conspicuous than normal.
Last year at this time we had a Dabchick incubating eggs…

.. no such luck so far this year
