I should have closed my eyes but I stood and watched the Dabchicks mate
They then moved so I could see 2 eggs in the nest already, so perhaps we will have at least another one
I also saw all 3 (now) teenager Dabchicks. I think I also now know the answer that Graham was contemplating in his comment to the last post i.e. do the first brood now have to look after themselves ? I watched as Dad charged the teenagers to make them get further from the nest, so I think they are on their own. Dad didn’t charge that aggressively but still made sure the teenagers knew they were not wanted, at least near the nest, if they had been other adult Dabchicks then I am sure it would have got a lot more physical.
One couple were letting their dog go in the water and chase the wildlife (as these particular owners always do) and I also saw a different dog try and get in the water right where the Coot is nesting, I had just previously warned the owner about the Coot and she did stop the dog going in, but I am not sure it would have been stopped if I had not been there
