After not going down the Slea for a few days most things seemed ‘as was’ but there was also a nice highlight. First I saw a Water Vole carrying some dry vegetation into a little burrow so I am hoping he/she is nesting there
Although I thought we had lost a Baby Moorhen near the Mill I did eventually see all 3 so we have lost just the one very early on. I also saw the single Coot baby and Graham had said a few days ago that he had only seen 1 egg so I wonder if they only laid the 1 egg or have others been predated ? Certainly the nest didnt seem to have suffered any attack so the Coots probably only laid the 1 ?
Then the highlight, in a different place to the earlier Water Vole sighting I saw TWO Water Voles together and 1 was just sitting on the bank only a few yards from me and didnt seem too nervous to my presence. The 2nd Vole swam across the river and then I watched as he ate something….

…I am just hoping that they breed as I have recently read that in captivity a Water Vole can live up to 5 years, but sadly in the wild 5 months is the normal life expectancy.
I will have to call this Vole ‘Barbara’s Vole’ as she is the one who seems to see it most often
