Experiment
After talking to Paul today I thought I would upload a small video of the baby Dabchicks to see if anyone downloads it to view ??? It is only an experiment and the video is low quality to keep the file size small. Just click on the link below to view… babydabs.wmv Terry PS you [...]
Saturday night successfully negotiated…
Saturday night successfully negotiated by the Dabs… …the other Dabs are also still around. We seem to have lost some Coots so I will try and look very carefully at which ones are missing, I am not worried by this as it is at this time of year that they sometimes seem to go their [...]
UPDATE: There is another pair of…
UPDATE: There is another pair of Dabchicks on the Slea, I believe that Dabchicks are usually solitary outside of the breeding season so assume they are hoping to mate and bring up their youngsters even though it seems a little late in the year. I just hope that the 2 pairs of adults do not [...]
They survived another night :)
The baby Dabchicks survived another night … …if I concentrate on the Dabs anymore I think I might have to change the name from ‘Life On The Slea’ to ‘Dabchicks On The Slea’ Terry
At last some good news…
At last some good news, the 2 baby Dabchicks survived the night At first I could only see 1 and feared the worst, but eventually the 2nd came into sight It looks like the Dabs may be on the move again though ? This shows last years parent feeding one of four of its little [...]
Sadly we have lost another one..
Sadly we have lost another one of the baby Dabchicks, this means that only 2 of the 5 have survived so far. Its impossible to say what has happened to them but I was hopeful that last night, after moving to a new nest, we had lost all we were going to. This is getting [...]
UPDATE: The Dabchicks seem to be moving…
UPDATE: The Dabchicks seem to be moving as the water level at their nest site has almost gone making the nest more accessible to cats, rats and people. I just hope where they end up is really safe for the 3 remaining little ones. Terry
Sadly we have lost another one…
Sadly we have lost another baby Dabchick overnight, so there are now just 3 out of the five babies still surviving. There is also no indication of how we have lost 2 in the last 24 hours, it could be cats, rats, getting into too fast a current and being swept away or even a [...]
UPDATE: I am hoping we have not lost one already…
UPDATE: I am hoping we have not lost a baby Dabchick already ? This morning there were 5 babies (I have a photo to prove it), but this afternoon both parents were diving for food so neither had a baby on their back and there were only 4 babies. I watched for an hour and [...]
We now have 5…
Just a quick post to say we now have 5 baby Dabchicks – – – This is just a Mallard drake having fun in the water… Terry
3 out of 4…
3 out of 4… Terry
Here is one, but we have 4…
Here is one… …but we have 4 – – I will be happier when they are a week old as they might then be able to keep out of dangers way a bit better than they can at the moment, they are VERY small. Terry
This is what I like about Moorhens…
This is what I like about Moorhens… … they are FANTASTIC families. This shows a Moorhen from the first brood, passing food to its sibling from the same brood, so that it in turn can pass the food onto a sibling from the second brood = brilliant family interaction and loyalty – – We also [...]
I have not seen…
I have not seen the Mallard with the elastic band around its beak/neck for a couple of days, I know the RSPCA came down but I dont think they caught her. The elastic band may have broken, and I really hope this is what has happened, however her tongue just hung over the edge of [...]
