I tried but failed, Dabchick update and unusual visitor…

I tried but failed… I sudden noise from near the Hub sent all the birds in the trees up in the air, a pigeon that seemed ready to fledge in the next few days couldn’t make it too the other side of the river and fell in, it struggled but could do nothing abouts its situation…

… the current took it towards me and I was just able to lie down and reach it but only after its head had been underwater with a risk of drowning. I took it and put it under the tree where it had come from to dry out. I then realised that a as it couldn’t fly, a dog would probably kill it. I recaught it with Alans help and took it to the Wildlife rescue in Ruskington. By now it was bleeding from the mouth and the Wildlife rescue said that it should be taken to Kirks vet to be put down humanely. Sadly I took it to Kirks who agreed to put it down only to find it had just died. I know to some people its ‘only a pigeon’ but it only has 1 life and that was terminated by something as simple as a sudden sound – it just shows how tentative a grip on life wildlife has :(

On a slightly happier note (but not completely) the 2 baby Dabchick are still doing well and growing fast. I watched this morning as both adults and youngsters were traveling downstream and they looked like they were ‘on a mission’ so I followed them. Sure enough the 2 adults attacked the ‘new’ pair of Dabchicks that were nesting in the reeds downstream of the Leisure Centre Bridge and drove them away. When I left the family of Dabs were still in the reeds and the ‘new’ pair were down a Cogglesford bend. I think as this is the second attack by our family of Dabs on the ‘new’ pair, this probably means that the ‘new’ pair stand very little chance of rearing any youngsters on the Slea this year :(

This is one of our Dab family attacking one of the ‘new’ pair…dab-attacking-dab.jpg

One piece of good news is that Mel saw a Common Sandpiper on the pond in Lollycocks field, I certainly have never seen one around here before :)
