I saw 1 dabchick on the Slea today, it seemed to be calling for its mate but had no reply. I have noticed that with the current high water there is a fast flow to the river and probably because of this all the Ducks and Moorhens seem to be keeping to the sides where they dont have to continuely paddle just to keep still. I know that Dabchicks normally like lakes rather than river because there is no ‘flow’ and also the levels on a lake are more consistent than a river. I just wonder if the rise in water level and stronger flow at present is keeping the Dabchicks from settling down to nest ?

Here is ‘Blackie’ from yesterday, he sometimes comes to me (because he knows he will be fed) near the old Slea sluice…
