A really bad day…

Its been a really bad day, I think we have lost the 2 baby coots, they only had 1 or 2 days life :( I watched mum for quite a while and she wasn’t looking for her babies and I certainly couldn’t see them. My personal view is that the most likely reason is that mum had to leave the nest (because her mate is dead and therefore there is no one to hep defend the family) which left the babies unguarded and a Magpie (or other predator) probably had them, this is backed up by the fact that the 1 remaining egg is also gone :(

I also only saw 4 of 5 and 6 of 7 baby Moorhens but this doesn’t worry me too much at the moment as they are getting harder to count because each day they get more mobile. If after a couple of more days without seeing 5 and 7 then I would start to think we may have lost 1 or possibly 2.

On my way home I found a dead Blackbird just opposite my drive, there are 3 Blackbirds that visit my garden and I am ‘friendly’ with all 3 of them, I feed them apple each day. So a bad day has turned into an even worse day.

Although a VERY BAD photo, this is the only one I have showing the 2 baby coots that are not around anymore…

Wildlife has such a precarious grasp of life :( :( :(
