I do not often…

I do not often post a picture that was NOT taken on the Slea, but I liked this one taken yesterday at Kingsbury Waterpark. Its a Great Crested Grebe with its little ‘humbug’ on its back, I assume the ‘humbug’ is saying.. ‘faster mum faster’ …back to the Slea… We still have the 3...

The Cogglesford 3…

This is the ‘Cogglesford 3′… …who are the 3 remaining baby Moorhens of 6, but they are getting bigger, Mum is incubating the next batch of 6 eggs already. I am now convinced that we have lost a baby Moorhen further upstream, so they now have just the 6 babies, but everyday that passes...

Adding 1 and 1 …

One of the millers told me today that he found a dead coot in the mill race on Saturday afternoon, he also said that it had an injured leg.  We know that our lone female Coot injured its leg in the fight with the Cogglesford bend Coot.  So adding 1 and 1, it looks...

The ‘new’ pair of Coots…

The ‘new’ pair of coots seem to have calmed down a little and do not seem quite so aggressive towards the other wildlife.  I am sure that there is now only 3 surviving moorhen babies at Cogglesford but we still have 7 with the other family further upstream.  The 3 baby family also has...

I do not really know what is going on…

A quick recap, we had a pair of Coots at Cogglesford, the male was killed and the female hatched 2 eggs but within a couple of days both babies had disappeared.  We also had a Coot just past Cogglesford bend.  Yesterday the ‘Cogglesford bend’ coot attacked the lone female but was driven off by...

I fear for…

I fear for the female coot near Cogglesford, the other Coot who’s territory is upstream of Cogglesford bend twice this morning went downstream to attack the female. The second attack was particular vicious and it appeared that the intruder was trying to drown the female. Interestingly a Mallard joined in and then (as also...

2nd post today…

I saw this on the banks of the Slea this afternoon… …ok, its a VERY BAD photo of a STOAT.  I saw it at Cogglesford bend near to where we have recently lost the 2 baby Coots and 1 baby Moorhen, so I wonder if this is the culprit ?  I cant quite bring...

Interesting behaviour…

I saw some interesting behavior today… The female coot (who has lost her 2 babies) went a little upstream and unsurprisingly the coot who is there started to attack her as it was in his/her territory. She was chased back downstream until she was passed Cogglesford bend, but still being harrassed by the other...

A really bad day…

Its been a really bad day, I think we have lost the 2 baby coots, they only had 1 or 2 days life I watched mum for quite a while and she wasn’t looking for her babies and I certainly couldn’t see them. My personal view is that the most likely reason is that...

Dead duck…

Dead duck…

There is a dead male mallard near Cogglesford Mill with obvious injuries to its neck, I hate to say this but again I personally think the most likely cause is a dog. If it is I wish that the small percentage of dog owners that let their dog chase the ducks would go into...
